TSQCD9064 R.D. BURMAN - A BOLLYWOOD LEGEND

At the time of his death R. D. Burman's career had all but collapsed. Yet that same year, 1994, saw the start of a reappraisal and reawakening of interest in his music that, even today, is still going on as producers compulsively sample and remix his work.

Son of an established singer and composer, S. D. Burman, and husband of another Bollywood legend, Asha Bhosle - herself sister of perhaps India's most famous singer, Lata Mangeshkar - R. D. Burman had automatic entry to the celebrity aristocracy of his time.

Yet he applied himself to his work with a passion so that, by the 70s, he reigned supreme and today it's his musical wit, energy and a willingness to experiment - sometimes with surprising results - that separate him from his contemporaries.

These 2CDs include some of his biggest hits as well as a few rarities and were all originally released by one of the various incarnations of The Gramophone Company Of India, the country's oldest record company. Taken together they tell the story of one of the nation's most creative popular musicians.

The music of Cape Verde - an archipelago 300 miles west of Dakar, Senegal - is a music of emigration. Her name is Lura.
Lura is part of a new generation of musicians rediscovering the hidden traditions of her ancestral homeland. Her music is inspired by the styles of Santiago - the most African of the islands, and the island from which her father came; styles such as batuku, funana, and coladera.
On M’bem di Fora ("I've come from far away"), Lura's new album, which is her debut release on Times Square/4Q Records, Lura gives a dazzling performance.
