R.D. BURMAN
- A BOLLYWOOD LEGEND |
|
At
the time of his death R. D. Burman's career had all but
collapsed. Yet that same year, 1994, saw the start of
a reappraisal and reawakening of interest in his music
that, even today, is still going on as producers compulsively
sample and remix his work.
Son of an established singer and composer,
S. D. Burman, and husband of another Bollywood legend,
Asha Bhosle - herself sister of perhaps India's most
famous singer, Lata Mangeshkar - R. D. Burman had automatic
entry to the celebrity aristocracy of his time.
Yet he applied himself to his work with
a passion so that, by the 70s, he reigned supreme and
today it's his
musical wit, energy and a willingness to experiment -
sometimes with surprising results - that separate him
from his contemporaries.
These 2CDs include some of his biggest
hits as well as a few rarities and were all originally
released by one of the various incarnations of The Gramophone
Company Of India, the country's oldest record company.
Taken together they tell the story of one of the nation's
most creative popular musicians.

GENO DELAFOSE
- LE COWBOY CREOLE |
|
There
is this other way of life in the south; a musical ethnicity
that has simmered itself to a uniquely homespun flavor.
Immersed in the culture since birth, Geno Delafose has
lived the life of a true cowboy. He relies on his traditional
Creole sensibility for guidance in music, and divides
his time between touring and operating his Double D Ranch
outside of Eunice, deep in Southwest Louisiana’s
bayou country, where he breeds cattle and raises quarter
horses.
"Le
Cowboy Creole" (Geno's sophomore release for Times
Square Records) marks the anticipated return of Geno
Delafose and French Rockin' Boogie. Expertly blending
country, rock, soul, r&b, along with classic Louisiana
Cajun, zydeco and swamppop, Geno's new cd further proves
why this young Creole cowboy has been hailed as "The
young hope of traditional zydeco" (CBS Sunday Morning).

TCHEKA - NU
MONDA |
|
Manuel
Lopes Andrade, aka Tcheka, was born on Santiago, the
most important African island of the Cape Verde archipelago.
At a very early age, he began to perform with his father,
Nho Raul Andrade, a highly popular violinist.
At 15 Tcheka began to develop a more personal style, based
on batuque, one of Santiago Island’s more popular
beats, which was originally played by Women. His aim was
to widen the appeal of batuque, turning it into a beat
that
everyone would love. Today, Tcheka is well known for his
work in modernising batuque, providing a new reading of
batuque while conserving its traditional Structures. On
his new album, Nu Monda, he returns to Batuque. He also
explores other styles such as tabanka, talulu and morna.
To coincide with this release, Tcheka, will be touring
North America in June 2007, as a special guest, opening
for the great Cesaria Evora. He will also be appearing
in various territories with his own band, both in June
and in September 2007.
“Cape Verde delivers another promising talent…Crisp
and percussive, his guitar playing creates potent Afro-Latin
hooks behind his soaring, feathery vocals.” The
Times(London)

TITO PARIS
- ACUSTICO |
|
Cape
Verdean music is normally associated with the great,
iconic Cesaria Evora. However, few people in North America,
except Cape Verdean and Portuguese expatriots, realize
that there is a male icon of Cape Verdean music who is
a legend in his native Cape Verde and Portugal – Tito
Paris. Even fewer people are aware that in 1985, Tito
produced Cesária Évora’s first album.
Tito is a multi-instrumentalist, composer , arranger,
producer, performer. Tito has been responsible for setting
the standard and pioneering the Luso-African musical
tradition, introducing influences from Angola, the north
of Portugal, Mozambique, and the samba of Brazil. These
influences are reflected on his new album “Acústico”.
The album contains the recording of the magical live
session of Tito and his band
at the Aula Magna in Lisbon. It also features three new
studio recording, all written by important composers from
Cape Verde in the 60’s. Their music
has in many ways set the standard for the music we hear
today from Cape Verde. The songs on the album Acústico
display the full range of Tito Paris as a musician, singer,
composer and arranger.

LURA - M'BEM
DI FORA |
|
The
music of Cape Verde - an archipelago 300 miles west of
Dakar, Senegal - is a music of emigration. While the
island nation’s best-known singer is Cesaria Evora,
a young singer born and raised in Lisbon’s
émigré community is presenting once-hidden
Cape Verdean styles to American and European audiences.
Her name is Lura.
Lura is part of a new generation of musicians rediscovering
the hidden traditions of her ancestral homeland. Her music
is inspired by the styles of Santiago - the most African
of the islands, and the island from which her father came;
styles such as batuku, funana, and coladera.
On M’bem di Fora ("I've come from far away"),
Lura's new album, which is her debut release on Times Square/4Q
Records, Lura gives a dazzling performance. Provocative,
sensual and spicy, Lura's voice breathes life into the
wide range of songs on the album, eleven of them magnificently
produced and arranged by Nando Andrade (also producer of
Cesaria's latest, Rogamar).
